Solar Energy Generation

Solar energy generation is acheived through harnessing the energy from our sun. On average, New Zealand has about 2000 hours of bright sunshine each year. In energy terms, New Zealand’s solar energy resource is about 4 kWh/m2 per day. If every house in NZ rooftop was utilised its sun exposure we would generate about twice the total national energy consumed!

A single 2kW solar panel prevents 40 tonnes of CO ² emissions over 30 years!

Solar energy can generate electricity and can heat hot water systems. Other uses include

  • remote area power supply systems such as remote farms or in national parks
  • electricity supply in urban areas
  • electric fencing and telecommunications.

The NZ government has recognised the potential of our solar energy generation and is running a comprehensive programme to lift standards and encourage the uptake of solar hot water systems. The Ministry of Energy aims to install 15,000 – 20,000 solar water heating systems by 2010. In addition to this commitment they offer two primary incentives to installing solar energy systems:

  • $500 grants for homeowners installing qualifying systems or up to $500 towards the cost of interest on a loan
  • a grants scheme for volume builders of new homes
